Didier Laloy : Noir's -musique de spectacle Couturière- (B,2011)****
This is an instrumental chamber folk quartet album from which it is unclear how much it is a product of improvisation. If it is, certain recognisable themes and especially traditional rhythms are prepared parts of a foundation, or something that was easily fallen back upon or lent upon, to create such a melodic movement involved, the core is played with a spontaneity from a skill to improvise. A couple of tracks, like “poli” for instance to take one of these out, are really remarkable for its rich inner change in speed, tension, colour and mood within one track, a logical change thanks to a creative group energy of contributive ideas. There are a few folk leanings and some older music references but the general compositions are very contemporary without ever becoming weird, strange or inaccessible. A few unusual elements however occur, like a small prepared piano contribution, respectful to the chamber folk way of contribution, and a folk version of a funky element on “Mardi Martin”.
Strangely enough the band seems to focus entirely on the French part of Belgium (although being released on the folk label based in Flanders), as no Dutch or English explanations are added. The notes explain how their idea of darker elements (“noir's”) more is that of an intimate nature, and where the element of “danger” becomes a creative aspect searching for an inner balance. The project is mostly led by the accordionist.
Kathy Adam plays violincello, Pascal Chardome plays acoustic guitar and piano, Didier Laloy diatonic accordion with Frédéric Malempré on percussion.
