Farzad Golpayegani : Four -digital-(IR,2010)****
After three previous albums with a fundament of electric guitar (a great fusion between progressive, metal, Persian folk and for the latest album symphonic), Farzad’s latest release (digital only) completely focuses on a fundament of acoustic guitar, a somewhat different approach.
In the meanwhile finally Farzad moved to Turkey after a more than 8 years ban on his sort of approach to sell or perform his music, even when it showed a different potential future to music in a Persian mode. Now two albums became available for official download, “Three” and this one, “Four”.
The tracks are loaded with layers and textures, perhaps a bit on the edge of what acoustic music needs (different from the electric/acoustic contrasts from the previous album) but still with successful result. Acoustic pickings are mixed with faster flamenco-typed Persian steel guitar (I mentioned before what the link was between Persian music and the origins of flamenco), and some violin and even a few string arrangements, and keyboard textures to fill up. The style is very much rooted in Persian guitar music, but has here and there an acoustic metal touch, and a few times more some baroque classical music composition. The ninth track, “74” starts with resonance guitar (sounding a bit like sitar) and shows the bridge between medieval music and a style in a Persian-Indian way. A really fine release from start to finish, but different from his powerful electric-based approach.
