the neo-folkish/folk music of
Irij

CD (2010)

AhnsternIrij -MCD- (CR/CH,rec.2006,pub.2010)****

Irij is a musical project, a solo project by violinist Meri Tadic (Eluveitie). Showing compositional vision, these six tracks on this mini-cd bring back much of Slavic folk (and mythology) reorganised through a composer’s mind (as violinist and singer), singing with vocal folk harmonies arrangements, nice guitar pickings and occasionally near-classical violin arrangements, carefully interwoven in the folk themes with here and there a collage with an environmental sound (a chicken, a pigeon, a crow, finger tapping on a table). The last track is with an acapella arrangement as full in sound as the other tracks, before a last melancholic collage. Meri has left Croatia (perhaps because of the recent war), and now lives in Switzerland. A slight melancholia regarding the native homeland can be sensed.
