Klimperei : Improvisation with myself 2 & 3 (F,2010)****/***°
Vol.2 : Litératures.***'
Three albums of Klimperei of “improvisations with myself”. This second volume has the theme of “literature” and each track is dedicated to another writer. Unfortunately I don’t know many writers too well, but on Kafka the association with “Metamorphosis” into a fly for instance is clearly. Much more than like purely improvised music (the recording process with oneself easily leads to some sort of improvised nature), the differences seems to be well prepared. Klimperlei’s world here is that of a rarities cabinet, opening different drawers and worlds with each track, with circus-like expression, playful with children toy instruments or thumb piano or found instruments, with some accordion and glockenspiel for instance mixed with more serious progressions and darker sounds, with fuzzed guitar and dark keyboards. The playfulness towards the dark sides easily brings Residents closer to association, Klimperlei’s world is a different range of expressions between playing lightly with toys or more serious with darker sounds.
Vol.3. Recyclages.***'
While Klimperei’s partly toy music can sound just slightly weird, but also light and rhythmical, with just a portion of seriousness, full of variation like in well arranged songs, in these “recycled” works these improvisations have more often a much more serious effect, directing towards more progressive, jazz-like or mood provoking areas. There are really lots of arrangements. Voices or more heavy parts are recorded more quietly in the background so that the whole variation of instruments can always be distinguished well in the mix. This goes beyond the barrel effect of a mood, takes its time, and makes several interesting changes within one track.
