After the first compilation with women singer/songwriters, with the associations of Joni Mitchell as an example and the Californian Mountain Area, this is the logical follow-up, with male singer/songwriters. One of the conclusions in the booklet is that a good singer/songwriter often falls back on his voice and guitar while some had the chance to create something with studio efforts, what the compilers think they have all in common is that to create a unique sound they almost are forced to build an island around themselves to create a convincing result, and that most of them have something of a being on the road (the “wanderlust”). The music with the booklet is such a complete document there is hardly anything to add, but I will try to describe the music of the compilation so that you have an idea what more there is to expect.

There’s much more than loner folk associated in this compilation. There are a few politically inspired songs involved, but unlike Dylan, performed in a moodier, sort of Perry Leopold-alike style. There’s great attention to the guitar, and often voice, and when with sparse arrangements they suit perfectly. One voice and approach reminded me of Cohen, one singer-songwriter had a small Donovan touch. But there are also a few Americans on the road, almost busker-like types. But even they are most often able to prove that even a rather mediocre moment in life and inspirations, its full commitment and sincerity to perform that idea can still make the time stand still. In this vein there are also a few poor man’s songs. Honesty in the recording process surely is a common factor in these recordings. Lots of background info and some rare photographs are included.
