Matt Millecchia : Silouhette of a Season (US,2008)**°
From most of the moody guitar pieces I have the impression I heard it all before. They're predictable, and are not leading to anything beyond the mood. They're much more like thin sketches for songs that are related with pop or rock music. It is not surprising that with extra arrangements they already work better and pass the empty melancholic feeling of them. A bit of flute, and especially the flugelhorn (Jeff Oster) and fretless bass (Michael Manring) on a track like “Mist” works more wonderfully. “Acid Lake” with Eugene Friesen on cello and Will Ackerman (yes, THE Will Ackerman, from Windham Hill Records ) on second guitar also works better and show a more complete feeling. The thin surface of the full album works ok but it's vision hardly crosses the just “nice” button. It is more like a thinned air version of a rock band.
