Odland Music (=private)  Ödland : The Caterpillar (F,2009)****

I love this EP of this rather cabaret folk duo who play some swinging songs and spoken word story-descriptive music as if this is part of a movie (with the charming quality of let’s say “Emilie Poulenc”) or even many movies. Most songs are in French but there is occasional, also charming and in its specific way musically-sounding French-flavoured English when introducing Alice-In-Wonderland-like fears before eating a mushroom. The little stories really are like mini movies. Besides bar piano and violin other instruments include a toy telephone (and a voice with “allo”) and a few other toy related sounds imitating birds or cat, just like the earliest Cocorosie, -if you remember-, in a similar way. Some rhythms were accompanying by a typing machine. A really lovely mini-album.

Odland Music (=private)     Ödland : Sankta Lucia (F,2011)***+

For this second full album, -the band was able to record and publish, thanks to an on line support sponsoring project-, they continue stylistically where they left us after their previous album. It is a rather long album this time with about 19 songs and 60 minutes of music. It was inspired from travelling throughout mostly Eastern Europe from the North of Italy to the North of Eastern Europe. Nice to hear as a travelling song like diary with recorded sounds from trains and environments a few songs are in English), here and there, a gypsy-trail Eastern European theme comes in. For a part we still have this ‘carnivale’ feeling, a travelling circus, romantic descriptions with old time piano, banjo, acoustic guitars, dulcimer and violin, sung by a girl lead voice playing innocent the game of travelling through life like a tourist/visitor. Here and there a story of old Europe come through, a united Europe is in fact their desire, travelling freely from country to country while discovering this unity. There are not too many changes, the story repeats itself a bit like an inner thought from a diary because they never stand still for too long, which makes the album feel a bit long too or without enough concreting destiny. A spoken word track and a small classical hint of arrangements were more than welcome to continue to watch these visions. I only wish the video clips recorded for these purposes would have been included. Still, this album is a nice completion of their works and inspirations. They have been lucky persons to have had this opportunity.

Odland Music (=private)  Ödland (F,2010)****

I would like to mention this wonderful over 75 minute full release of Ödland too, even when I don’t see much attempt to promote themselves. The music has something of a fantasy freak circus movie, with surreal but also romanticised or lyricalised fantasies, while a bar piano with cello and violin builds up the tension before the curtain will open..(“la jalousie amoureuse”)... Like on Cocorosie, electronic cats and other animals play in the background on the odd stories of “La chanson de parasite” or on “Les yeux de l’Oiseau”. Just look at the nice illustrated collage animation movies : they’re like a fantasy story book for adults. A few songs are in English. This has something of a small theatre cabaret, where the storybook becomes real in the mind of the listener. Singing saw is another occasional instrument. Most of it is led by this lovely sweet grown up girlish voice of Alizée who is storytelling with her singing.
