Orbál : Lendemain de la veille (B,2010)****
Orbál is a new Belgium chamber-folk group with an interest for uncomplicated, soft and light chamber-versions of folk dances arranged into melodic near-improvisations. Mostly the flute, sax and accordion play rather simultaneously the melody line, and the darbukka, this Middle Eastern percussion instrument, is the rhythm instrument. Only a few of lalala’s are the only vocals. The inspiration very much is rooted into the multi-cultural openness and influence in Belgium, ranging from Jewish over Spanish-Moorish-Arab influences from the South (like the light nylon flamenco and Moorish rhythms and melodic flavours on the first and third track), Belgian light chamber ideas mixed with melodies from Balkan plokas/Scottish airs origin, and some waltz tempos. There are playful ideas too, like the glass sound and straw blowing water bubbles for the intro in the fourth track. This music gives the impression of early summer, swinging in the breeze and sunshine blowing, whistling recognisable melodies that come from far away, rhythmically whirling its new life to breed.
Orbál is a sextet consisting of Johannes Genard on guitars, banjo, awkward dancing ; Jonas Malfliet on Hammond, piano, melodica, Orval beer bottle ; Lise Smolders on tenor & soprano saxophone, fiddle ; Rebecca Van Bogaert on flute, metallophone and Simon Leleux on “anything you want as long as it makes an interesting sound when he hits it (excluding small animals)” ; Thomas Clément on double bass.
