"PSYCHEDELIC FOLK POP &
PSYCHEDELIC POP FOLK"
-a radioshow-
Some of the new psych folk groups have other influences than from 'progressive / psychedelic music' and 'folk music' like it was often so in the seventies. It is sometimes very clear musicians also didn't deny the 'pop'-element. Pop can also be uplifting in a positive way. It gives us a feeling of easiness, clearness and comfort. If serious music has these elements, the happy feeling of being success in life, of liking a normal life can be a just a uplifting detail. Luckily, the poetic part, the dreamy intimistic going into the deep of our feelings and the soul, is also still here.

A few examples within this category you can find underneath.

This first page was related with a radioshow. Next pages are the real review pages.

In the previous radioshow I played some Modern intimistic dreamy (lo fi) singersongwriters :

Paul Roland : House of Dark Shadows (UK,Pastell,1986)°
"Madelaine" 3 min, "Lon Chaney" 4 min
Paul Roland : Danse Macabre (UK,Bam Caruso, 1987) *'
The Great Edwardian Air-Raid 4 min
dark psych pop ss. Now I think it has been a bit overrated in the eighties, but there still are a couple of fine songs.
Smog : Red Apple falls (UK,Domino Rec., 1997) **
The Morning Paper 4 min, Blood Red Bird 4 min
pop  intimistic folk ss
Leslie Q : The casual Plane (USA,Privat,199?) *°
Tr. 6,"Pretend you're real" 2 min, tr. 12,"Power of addition" 3 min, Tr.13,"She said she wouldn't" 1 min
Leslie Q : Presque Vu'(USA,Privat,199?) **
Tr.4, "Rise up" 4 min
lo fi folk with sometimes raga-like guitar
Magical Island : Small (USA,Privat, 199?) *
Tr.1, Intro 2 min, tr.3, "Radio Star" 5 min, tr.11,"Inways these days" 5 min
housemade styled dark minimal pop psych folk

Not much of the genre above still touches me now. I still don't see the lo fi recordings as much rewarding.
Of course there are exceptions and that's why people might have started taking this (too) seriously.

April Sky : Palace of Joy (B, Koch Int., 1994) *****
Tr.1, "Palace of Joy" 4 min
pop psych folk, one of the most promising groups from the nineties in Belgium. They recorded a full album, but unfortunately it never got released for various reasons.Only a single-cd exist, and a demo tape. Only one song on the single is awful thanks to a bad contract and a must have untalented drummer on one track. The rest is incredible. Powerful emotional female voice, and pych folk pop band, inspired by Trees, Pink Floyd and even Abba. April Sky disbanded end 90's. Later Mea Culpa was formed out of the ashes. Now Carmen stopped with music and transformed her talents to other fields of importance.

One of the more interesting groups of new symphonic if you ask me). Jörgen has some own projects. Home Page : http://come.to/jmo-music. One gossip : Mellow Records never payed the group for the recordings ! ....!? The lable has however many good reissues.

Roots of Echo latest album (1996)

A few more remarks for (and made during) this particular radioshow  :

Fit and Limo's items are categorised under Psych Folk under inspiration from the Incredible String Band. However some items would fit better here. "That totally tore my head off "is somewhat different. More electric than acoustic elements makes this item more psychelic underground pop orientated than their other items. Has simularities with Stormclouds here.
Later I made a separate Fit & Limo page.
'Discolor' is a project from Fit & Limo and Harald Strecker from the Cosmic Gardeners (another more late 60's new folk spaced-out psychedelic group which I don't know so well yet) and stono records. Trance-psychedelica based.
Contact label : septembergurls@compuserve.com
(Cosmic Gardeners : C/O Fa Roithmeier, Stone Records,Unterferriederweg 2,92353 Postbauer,Germany)
The Smell of Incense from Sweden has a few items which fit into the more psychedelic progressive folk area but has a modern element which can interest the psych folk pop listener who can stand longer (evolving) tracks too. Their "Through the gates of deeper slumber" is also available from September Gurls Records.
The label has also the Dutch item Nightwatch which is not easy to categorise, but I think it will fit perfect here for the ones interested in the other items too. A really nice album which reminds me at some intimistic moments from the best Baskish progressive folk groups, partly because the album cover does remind me already there.
Folli Di Dio is one of he nicer late psych folk prog pop items, from 1989, from Italy. Recommended. Also from Mellow Records.
From Gorky's Zygothic Mynci I think "Bwyd Time" has many interesting tracks, but their mini album "Llanfwrog" I like the best till now. (I don't have all their items and don't know so wel their products from last 5 years). But Belle & Sebastian listeners who like also pleasant psychedelica should try their items too.
They have a wonderfull website (with sound samples) at www.gorkys.com
