Radio Noisz Ensemble : Yniverze (D,1982+1981,re.2009)****°
If no one makes any review of this one how could other people really find out about this great item ? Radio Noise Ensemble was in fact the instrumental version of Emma Myldenberger, a band with guests Mani Neumeier and Sigi Ziegler (at times jazz fusion driven percussion, congas and tablas) and with Matthias Gassert as percussionist, Topsi Tkac on jazzy bass and violin, Biber Gullatz on the Third Ear Band flavoured oboe but also on Arab and Chinese flutes, crumhorn, piano and electric piano and Michel Meyer on guitar/mandolin.
The music sounds like beautifully improvised music with classical (melodies) with Medieval music (crumhorn,..) hints (on the longest track in small moments a just slightly oriental flavour) by an experienced band in this form, bringing except Third Ear Band (for its obvious tabla/oboe association) this time but also more often the Polish ethno-folk improvisers Osjan in mind too (especially for its freer improvisations with flute and crumhorn during tabla driven excursions, or more up tempo wildness). The album could have lasted longer for me, for it works as a beautiful trip or great live concert, ending however with a shorter and strange more free improvisation, not bringing us to anywhere new.
The bonus tracks (taken from the live tapes and one track from a 1981 demo) therefore are a great and welcome surprise, because they show the band with more and bright ideas within this frame of rhythmically smooth improvisations. There is for instance a blues-jazzy part led by flute improvisation on “Alina” with a pushing repetitive acoustic part, with use of oboe and crumhorn parts too. “Ala Dalona” is based upon a Middle Eastern improvisation (played by oud (?)and mandolin, Arab flute, double bass, and tablas). The demo track is also rather adventurous in energy.
Unfortunately for the band who was developing full potential in improvisation faced a changed world which was no longer interested in acoustic, not even bloody serious music had to give up the ensemble a couple years later.
