Robin Scott

LP (1979)->CD

Sunbeam Rec.    Robin Scott : Woman from the warm grass (UK,1979)***°'

After his 1969 John Peel’s appearance, Robin was contacted by Sandy Roberton, the impresario of Synasthesia, Keith Christmas, Al Jones,... and he was put in studio to work with backing band Mighty Baby while next door Jimmy Page and Roy Harper were recording.

The songs are often poetic, and were inspired by perhaps Dylan and Cohen, but also Paul Simon, without any imitation of their styles. He mixed real poetic moments, with inspirations from personal experiences, a love affair, or just fantasies.

Just a few tracks are more rocking, like “The Sailor”, and the closer, “The Purple Catcher”, songs which does not give yet an idea of the depths that still will be explored. Most other tracks have a darker approach, with strong emotional tension, textual strength and strong emphasized acoustic guitar (possibly also influenced by Cohen's guitar on his earliest albums). On the also bit more rocking and slightly progressive “Penelope”, you can hear most clear how colourful and deep Robin’s voice really can be. Just a few times, like on “I am your suitcase lover” he might have had Dylan in mind. The arrangements are really well done, sometimes sparse, like some cello on “Point of Leaving” ; Robin delivered a strong core with his guitar.

The bonus recording comes from a Peel session done shortly after the LP was recorded. It is an acid folk track with female dual vocals.

A great perhaps classic album.

At the time the record came out Robin shared stage with John Martyn, Shelagh McDonald and Forest, but there wasn’t much effort made to sell.

Robin changed direction after this, and changed his artist’s name later into M, with a very different approach and a different story and personality (just remember the hit “Pop Musik”).
