PhantasmagoriaThe God Box : Psymphonettes (D,2002)****

Symphonettes is another group with Limo (vocals, guitars, bass, sitar, mellotron, chamberlin, harpsichord, percussion), with Leonidas (-in Belgium that are mostly known as famous chocolats-) on double bass, Theresa L. on vocals and UFOor elsewhere Haffi on drums. It’s a kind beautiful psychfolk-pop dominated by Limo’s sweet harmony vocals with mellotron and sitar mostly accompanied with sparse rhythms and texturing guitars. All songs are English which makes it best accessible for foreign listeners. A song like “Bogglin’” has a kind of undeliberate early Pink Floyd-like harmonic arrangements. “Door” is a bit more uptempo and almost danceable (as neo-60’s psych) with harpsichord, still as sweet as all the rest, still as psychedelic pop, with some short electric guitar solo. Elsewhere the English group Kaleidoscope and that style of kaleidoscopic visions comes to mind… The introduction of the CD (taken from the song lyrics of “Salvia divine”) :

Hello earthling, how do you do ? ..A new dawn is yawning .. it’s suddenly flashing into being .. a fiction in a dream .. I’ve joined that scene .. We did as we’d take it for straight .. the higher tongue of an unfamiliar mind .. taking food of unknown mushrooms and wondering at the running time..” …“Let’s have a kitchen yoga to purify the ground –make every edge a vibrating edge .. washed in the wake of mellotron..”…

A song like “Night of Kool-aid Spiked” is more energetically psychedelic, while a song like “Leap from Rock to Rock”, nicely balances between mellotron and sitar with an additional trumpet-like sound, more into psych-folk with a medieval touch, while a song like “Head Maker” is more poppy (in a psychedelic way). Last track, “Snake Alphabeth” is a quiet and beautiful psychedelic closer, with Theresa on spoken word telephone voice, with amplified and acoustic guitar picking, keyboards, birds, double bass.

Recommended to fans of the psychedelic folk-pop genre.

PhantasmagoriaThe God Box : Aaahh! (D,2005)****

On the first part of the album we hear dreamy springtime psychpop vocals with roundabout-rhythmic organ, cosmic chamberlin and mellotron, with compact neo-60’s songs, on a bed of light and pleasant happy rhythms, with English vocals. All tracks on the album seems to be more or less a solo work by Limo (Fit & Limo, Shiny Gnomes, Discolor,..). He sings, plays Rickenbacker-, Johnson-, acoustic guitars, danelectro bass, sitar, autoharp, mellotron, piano, chamberlin, Farfisa organ, Korg Polysix, percussion, and has the help of UFO on drums on 4 tracks or Haffi on 3 other tracks. Strings on track 5 are by The Nereide Neith Trio. The first “Innocence” part has 7 songs, which ends with an 8th beautiful dreamy instrumental track, a good introduction to the “Experience” part with 4 longer, brilliant, sweet melancholic, introspective, calm, mostly instrumental psychedelic tracks. For me the best of both God Box releases, spanning a wider area of expressions, and more psychedelic in a beautiful dream sphere sense as before.
