Voodoo Rhythm Rec.
The Pussywarmers : My Pussy belongs to Daddy (CH,2009)****
This is something I could only expect to come from the Voodoo Rhythm label. But in God’s sake what style do these hot juicy Pussywarmers play ? Raw hunky tonk old time folk ? They sing in group with a punkish attitude towards the group singing, in English, sound humoristic at times, for instance as if being a belly speaking puppet or a foreigner who can only remember some words for being too drunk to speak differently (“I wanna have”), or while being early morning’s bloody serious at the solo‘, or melancholic at times when hit by the poison of alcohol, singing a German song once. The production is great, like each Voodoo Rhythm album, combining the rawness of the surprise of semi-live acts, and the sober seriousness with an ear to the best sounds and arrangements in studio conditions. This way the songs vary a lot, from street gang walking brass band near a circus, to old time jazz (“au revoir madame”), showing gospel-blues lyrics on semi-old time music (“I saw the devil”) falling back more often on rather honky-tonk rhythms, sometimes with parlophone singing, playing in general on banjo/double bass/trumpet and trombone(?). This production makes the songs more than from any late night entertaining bands, but presents them like collection of real life inspirations and unique moments.
