The Trysting Tree (UK,2009)***'
The Trysting Tree is a very moody minor key, melancholic album. The Trysting Tree is a duo consisting of Laura Hulse on ethereal wordless vocals and Steven Collins on electric piano, electrified picking guitar, droning keyboard and harmonium and harmonica chords, zither accents and glockenspiel. The tracks evolve very organically, like lullabies. One time the vocals are more dreamy angelic, then a bit colouring or like singing nuns (track 9). This last track was a German folk song, “My mother bids me bind my hair” collected by Haydn. Another track is taken from the Quaker writings of George Fox. One more track (5) is taken from the Evening prayer, psalm 27, the atmosphere remains less concrete like a mist of atmospheres. Very enjoyable.
