Thinguma*JigSaw

CD (2007)

They called their music “splatter-folk”, not completely sure why. I only know there’s no restraint in emotions and expressions, from serious songs accompanied by banjo, (like “Jumping Jock Flesh” or “waltzofdeath”, sung by male voice) to even more emotionally driven songs (like “who’s laughing now?”), to weird theatre (like “my blood giggles”) and beautiful instrumentals (like “a solid severance”, on banjo, bowed instrument, sounds), of which some returning musical themes are variations on Philip Glass’s “Koyaanisquatsi”, faster minimalism played by flute and banjo mostly, just once with a song added over it. One of the weird charming inspirations is Daniel Dale Johnston who I don’t know enough to recognise how much (there’s a cover of “walking the cow”). The music is mostly led by banjo with singing saw or flute with voice. It is an album that demands repeated listen to reveal its whole concept, and then still it does not reveal all. Recommended !
