Tony Doré and Friends : Fall Away like Leaves (US,rec.2009-2010,pub.2011)***
Tony Caro & John made just one psychfolk related release in the 70s, now Tony Dore is back with some friends and a new release. Many songs deal with various ways of a retrospective vision. A few tracks musically also refer to the old style release. I very much like the first song about looking back at feelings during the 1999 sun eclipse, (with a reference to the old "eclipse of trhe moon" song of course), arranged by acoustic guitars and sliding guitar mostly. A few other tracks, equally fitting with that early release, also have acoustic-based arrangements that have an exotic touch like with the use of sitar, sometimes mixed with keyboards. -“Skinwalker” for instance would even fit well with Into the Labyrinth-. Tony’s voice everywhere still is attractive. The songs catch the attention well (as an example, “Grand Piano playing”) but with some of its open endings and conclusions they fall apart a bit more as occasionally passing by ideas as they could be, like another a fragment in time. There are also a few more rocking, and say a bit bluesy tracks, where the rocking element isn’t really coming out very much because of the softer and perhaps more acoustic inner core. Often there they sound a bit like a young band which they aren’t. There’s also one fun country bluegrass track called “my brain” about Tony’s brain that “has a mind of his own”, making fun with some therapeutic conclusions. As I said, it is a good time of looking back on certain hippie chores (“Retrospect” for instance sees the disadvantages from those days). The songs find a new inspiration and still fit well to contribute, like an extra chapter.
