Static CaravanTunng : Mother's Daughter and other songs (UK,2005)****

Some years ago the term folktronica was used very differently from today. Tunng is said to make lots of use of this perfect blend of the acoustic and electronic, and they do this in a singer-songwriting context. The multilayered, perfectly produced arrangements of voices, acoustic guitars, electric bass, clicks and beats are fresh and stimulating, and they are worked out to the essence of what the songs (de)serve and make best.  Highly recommended !
Tunng, unbelievable but true, basically is only a duo, consisting of Mike Lindsay and Sam Genders, with just the help of a handful of people like on cello or vocals on three different tracks.

Full Time Hobby Rec.Tunng : ...and then we saw land (UK,2010)****

Tunng showed with this release a charming warm sound of laptop precision with all the colourful acoustic layers (acoustic guitar, piano,..) and a bit of electronic keyboards and rhythm box and electric guitar. It’s a pleasure to hear all the layers, and change during the song parts, with the vocal arrangements which have overdubs and female/male dual harmonies, sometimes humming with the warmth from within the songs. There is some use of attractive almost danceable rhythms (with some handclapping arrangements sometimes) confirming the ideas of all the strong pop abilities within the songs. Only a few subtle reverbs and melodic rhythms are added to all this. A very attractive production, a colourful fantasy in songs.

neednowater Soy Un Caballo / Tunng : Robin -single- (B/UK,2009)****

Tunng and Soy Un Caballo each share one side of this 7" single, two versions of the same song by Soy Un Caballo, as if it are just two comparable songs that have mostly the pompompom rhythm in the middle in common, as well as a happy good morning feeling, as some opposite of a lullaby. Tunng’s version, in English, was performed by Sam Genders and Mike Lindsay from Tunng. It is a great happy entertaining laptop folk song with clicking and handclap rhythm shared by acoustic guitars and pompompom singings, and overdubbed lead vocals, a bit of keyboard and an ending with a laughing toy and laptop collage sounds. The original by Soy Un Caballo in French is led by either a breathy girlish lead voice (with backing vocals arrangements) or soft male voice, with subtle-Latin flavoured acoustic and some amplified guitars, minimal melodic vibraphones and a happy rhythm, including the intact pompompom in the middle and a small additional drum section. A great one !!
