Private   Aldo Pinelli : Una Seleccion de Vieja Canciones, Montanas, Bosques y Lagos (ARG,2007)**°'

Aldo Pinelli is also part of Habitat, a neo-symphonic band. The idea behind this solo release appealed most to me. Its subtitle is “a selection of old songs, mountains, woods and lakes”. It showed Aldo’s classical use of guitar, and inspirations from older periods into a new light and context, at times with a Steve Hackett/Anthony Philips touch of guitar music with more symphonic arrangements. A few from the symphonic parts were a bit disappointing, but in the evolution of the work it can be forgiven and shows enough variation to compensate for that (flute/guitar parts and the solo guitar parts especially).  Synthesizer on it's own can sound a bit unnatural, and a luckily not too often, but a few times it is also used too much as a texturing effect, which is rather unnecessary. For Steve Hackett fans this won’t be so disturbing, but the guitar playing of its own has more musical qualities than some of the still too easily added parts of mellow texturing of keyboards or percussion. After getting used against my will a bit to the idea, the guitar pieces still luckily dominate the concept, and show interesting variations with more often very classical ideas (“Estudio 2” is my absolute favourite), with more moments of excellence.

HTT   Aldo Pinelli :  Mantos y Tapices Sobrepuestos (ARG,2010)***°
- otra selección de viejas canciones-

This last work of guitarist Aldo Pinelli continues where he left before with a bigger collection of ideas based upon tunes and old music compositions (with an occasional song). One time they sound more like classical baroque, then more in the vein of Anthony Phillips (post-Genesis), then like old music tunes with sparse arrangements of cello and flute or harpischord. But there are really too many sorts of changing excursions to be able to categorise them too much. Compared to the previous album there’s a better balance between the solos and sparse arrangements, and luckily also that most arrangements are more acoustic and are less compensated with keyboards for the real chamber instruments, except for the last three tracks. The musical conceptual idea hangs between a lightly walking journey into classical tunes and different melodic worlds with guitar-based chamber-like but at times also a few neo-symphonic touches. The best album of Pinelli so far! Very enjoyable!

Aldo Pinelli on classical, acoustic, electric guitars, bass, percussions, keyboards and vocals, Paula Dolcera on flute and cello, Silvia Pratolongo on percussions and  Elizabeth Minervini on keyboards.

HTT     Aldo Pinelli :  La Era de Melania (ARG,2011)****
        - Mujeres, Lugares y Momentos-

This I think is the most successful album I have heard from Aldo Pinelli, and it sounds very inspired, like an old music book with chapters and a couple of impressions.  It has a special sensibility, which is under the ray of a growing process of pregnancy and the expected child, Melania. At the same time other important women, like surrounding supportive family members are part of this love commitment. Also, certain Argentine environments seem to inspire to describe the moments. The way Aldo Pinelli plays the acoustic guitar has all the ear and sensitivity of certain old or Renaissance music, the pieces are a bit more descriptive, when a bit more keyboards appears colouring the compositions this directs slightly into the post-Genesis areas. More than ever before, the keyboards are subtly adapted and fit with the guitar sensitivity of movements. “Etel” reveals a melody like in a children story, the whole piece seems like a page from a book. “Danza IV” sounds like an old medieval dance, I think it is, a beautiful rearrangement. “Melania”, with the recording of a children’s voice sound like the first steps on earth, light and revealing, happy like an early morning sunshine beam. “Sendere Secreto” is slightly different and seems to have imitated a bagpipe tune with keyboard arrangements. Here and there a few songs appear revealing the Argentine landscapes and involvement. Almost no percussion has been used. A bit of cello (Paul Dolcera), little keyboards, most often acoustic guitar, a little bit of subtle fuzz guitar are added and some melodic flute improvisations (Paula Dolcera), and seemingly also some windchimes (Silvia Pratolongo).

If this was a real post-Genesis item it was destined to become famous. As a listening experience this is surely rewarding and reveals itself as a modest and pleasant masterpiece.
