(LP/CD 1973,re??) + CD (2000)

1. Scenescof          Chris Thompson (NZ,1973)****°

first descrption (radio show) :
"Not to miss item in vein of Nick Drake, Donovan and Al Stewart. Very intimate poetic finger picking guitar, with some Indian instrumentation adds by Magic Carpet members. Interpretation of Yeats "Song of the wandering Aengus" is wonderful. A highly recommended gem."

Sunbeam      Chris Thompson -2CD- (NZ,1973,re.2010)***°°+*°°

Some years back the Chris Thompson album was already reissued, but apparently not too many people noticed. The sunbeam label gets more notice and luckily they decided to do a new reprint, with extra tracks. The album itself is essential, contains a few classic psych-folk songs with some tabla by the Magic Carpet tablaist as I have mentioned before. The few alternative takes are I feel not absolutely necessary. The out-takes of that period are of course welcome, and so are a few of the tracks on the second CD very fitting. A few other tracks remind me more of Wizz jones. The bluesier tracks appeal less to me. I hope to review the original album or this reissue some day later (no promos were sent, so I can review this any time). Of course I will already give attention to this reissue on my radio show.

2. Wild Rose Music       Chris Thompson : Time Flies (NZ,2000)*°°

Having been very enthusiastic about his 70's solo album I was somewhat disappointed hearing this album with more simplicity directing towards homefeel blues and tramp country. Also the production did put everything so much to the foreground it destroyed the left over magic. The quiet and very nice song "The arrow and the song" on a text of H.W. Longfellow could have been much better with another production, but it still remains a beautiful song....
