the psychedelic Folk of Fit & Limo

Goeienavond. Tot u spreekt The Magic Mushroom. Aansluitend op onze vorige uitzending, waarin we The Cosmic Gardeners aan het woord lieten, stellen wij u vanavond voor aan een ander psychedelisch folk-duo: Fit & Limo, tegenwoordig residerend in Altdorf bij Nürnberg. Het concept van dit programma zal ongeveer hetzelfde zijn als dat van vorige keer: we zullen de ontstaansgeschiedenis van deze formaties en haar zijtakken chronologisch proberen te volgen, hierbij begeleid door muziek uit de meest recente albums van de groep.

FIT & LIMO - Morgenröte (1) - 2'30

Fit & Limo vertolkten als instrumentale inleiding tot dit programma zonet voor u het nummer "Morgenröte", waarmee ze hun CD "The Serpent Unrolled" openden in 1998. Hun ontstaansgeschiedenis reikt echter veel verder terug: zoals we in onze vorige uitzending al aanhaalden zat Limo (zijn echte naam is Stefan Lienemann) in de jaren zeventig in dezelfde klas als Bern Roithmeier (die tegenwoordig hoofdzakelijk door het leven gaat als Riff, van The Cosmic Gardeners). In deze periode speelden de twee al samen als akoestisch duo onder de naam Baumbart. Limo (van opleiding eigenlijk opvoeder) zat in die periode ook nog bij een folk-band. In 1978 stortten ze zich, samen met onder meer hun toenmalige vriendinnen Fit en Bela op het politieke cabaret, onder namen als Hans Karl Combo of Combinat K. In 1984 begonnen Limo en Riff de psychedelische beat-formatie The Twist, zowel als The Eyes Of Fate, waarvan gelijktijdig releases verschenen op het Servil-label van Limo en op het door Riff opgestarte Stono Records. De releasepolitiek van dat label hebben we vorige week al uitgebreid behandeld, dus daar kunnen we vandaag het zwijgen toe doen. In totaal zouden er van The Eyes Of Fate twee cassettes uitkomen, en van The Twist vier. Rond 1987 startten Limo en Riff samen met Britz en Vital een ander project, Pure Lge, waaraan eigenlijk nooit officieel een einde werd gesteld. Tot nu toe bestaan er van de groep vier albums met psychedelische punk folk-rock: "The Son Of Pure Lüge", "5", "16 Tons" en "Play". Laatstgenoemde kwam uit in 1989 en betekende meteen een voorlopig einde van de muzikale samenwerking tussen Riff en Limo: Riff begon toen met The Cosmic Gardeners en zijn eerste solo-opnamen, en Limo was alweer met twee groepen tegelijk begonnen.

U hoorde "The dew" en "Traumtr", twee nummers van Fit & Limo uit 1998. Limo was begonnen met het opnemen van tracks samen met zijn partner Fit rond 1983, onder de logische hoofding Fit & Limo. De vroegste voorbeelden van de muziek, die ze toen maakten, kunt u terugvinden op twee releases: de in 1988 door het Bouncing Corp.-label op rood vinyl uitgebrachte LP "Retrospective 1983/1988" en de in 1995 bij Catweezle verschenen CD "Feather & Dust", die loopt van 1983 tot 1989. Vanaf de helft van de jaren tachtig was Limo ook terug te vinden bij de space-rock-formatie Shiny Gnomes, waarvan het debuut in 1986 uitkwam bij het Pastell-label. De titel ervan was "Wild Spells", en de LP - met naar eigen zeggen van Limo vooral op Pink Floyd gente muziek - schijnt tegenwoordig erg zeldzaam te zijn. Wij hebben ze alleszins nog nooit gezien. De personen die deel uitmaakten van de groep, zijn altijd alleen bekend geweest onder hun voor- of bijnamen: Limo, Hanz, Mikk, Gasmann, Ufo, en op de tweede LP ook Repp, medestichter van The Twist. Dat tweede album, "Some Funny Nightmares", was een product van het grote Polydor-label en betekende in 1987 een bescheiden commercile doorbraak voor Shiny Gnomes.

Aangezien we u geen recent materiaal van Shiny Gnomes meer voor te stellen we hebben, speelden we u weer twee nummers van Fit & Limo: "Song of the basilisk" en "Walking the labyrinth". En nu gaan we dus weer verder met de Shiny Gnomes-geschiedenis: de eerste twee LPs werden door de groep zelf geproducet, maar voor "Fivehead", hun derde release (weer op Polydor), trokken ze naar Engeland, naar de Justice Room studio van Annabel Lamb, waar ze samenwerkten met Dave Young, de toenmalige gitarist van de groep van John Cale (die als geluidsman ondermeer met Nico, Brian Eno en Element Of Crime gewerkt had). Polydor bracht met een vettige knipoog naar de portemonnee een jaar later (in 1990) ook nog een 12-inch uit met zogenaamde club remixes, "Liquid Ladder" getiteld, ongeveer samen met de nieuwe Shiny Gnomes-CD "Colliding". Commercieel gezien haalde dat echter niet veel uit, en in 1992 vonden we de groep terug bij Rough Trade, voor een release, die zowel op doorzichtig vinyl als op CD verscheen: "Innocent Aval". Het nieuwe platenhuis lag Limo en zijn vriendjes wel, want de rest van hun catalogus bleven ze bij Rough Trade hangen, achtereenvolgens met "Orange" (uit 1993, verschenen op CD en op oranje vinyl), "MC Creatrix" (uit 1994, op CD en veelkleurig vinyl) en hun meest recente, "Weltraumservice" uit 1996. Van "MC Creatrix" bracht Rough Trade ook een versie met remixes uit, door groepen als Mouse On Mars, U¨trlsi, Locust en The High Corporation. Het was een zeer goedkope CD, maar dat is dan ook zowat het enige goede, dat we erover kunnen zeggen. Volslagen overbodig. De bekendheid van Shiny Gnomes kreeg een flinke steun, doordat ze in de vroege jaren negentig samen met Hawkwind op tournee mochten, maar buiten Duitsland bleef de groep voor de meeste mensen een gesloten boek. Limo is dan ook nog steeds als opvoeder werkzaam in Altdorf.

Fit & Limo, met "I'll be clay" en "Mondisch". Want ondanks zijn werk bij Shiny Gnomes bleef Limo ook thuis dingen opnemen. In 1991 verscheen zo de derde Fit & Limo-release (op het Hurdy Gurdy Beat-label): "That Totally Tore My Head Off". De opnamen ervan vonden plaats tussen september 1990 en januari 1991, en er werd aan meegewerkt door Shiny Gnomes-drummer Ufo, Vital van Pure Lge op harmonium en gitarist Fritz Hopemann. Net als de vorige voortbrengselen van het duo bleef de verspreiding ervan hoofdzakelijk beperkt tot Duitsland. Zelf maakten wij pas kennis met Fit & Limo (op plaat dan toch) in 1993, dank zij twee vinyl-releases: de tussen september en december 1992 opgenomen LP "Angel Gopher" (verschenen op Kick Side Records) en de prachtige, maar tegenwoordig helaas onvindbare EP "This Moment", onder de subtitel "Fit & Limo play Incredible String Band" uitgebracht op het obscure Ruhra Pente-label. Voor degenen die deze uitgaven gemist hebben is er gelukkig de in 1995 gereleaste CD "Folly Is An Endless Maze", waarop de volledige LP en EP terug te vinden zijn, evenals een hoop nieuwe tracks, ingeblikt tussen januari 1993 en maart 1995, onder de titel "Autre Monde". Deze dubbel-CD is een uitgave van het Strange Ways-label. De opvolger van "Autre Monde", "The Serpent Unrolled", is de CD, waaruit alle muziek, die we tot nu toe in deze uitzending lieten horen, vandaan komt; hij verscheen zoals gezegd in 1998 en werd door Fit & Limo zonder enige verdere assistentie opgenomen. We zijn er ten andere ook al bijna helemaal doorheen gewandeld. Alleen "Born in the eleventh month" heeft u van ons nog tegoed.

Vooraleer "The Serpent Unrolled" werd uitgebracht was er nog een release, waaraan Fit & Limo meewerkten: de aan The Incredible String Band opgedragen CD "Winged We Were" van het Hand/Eye Systems-label (dat wordt uitgebaat door de mensen van Stone Breath). De song, die erop gecoverd werd door Fit & Limo, "Images of April", staat ten andere ook op "The Serpent Unrolled". Als gevolg van de Hand/Eye connectie kwam de vinyl-EP (op zeven-inch formaat) "The Silence Of A Million Tongues" (vorig jarig verschenen op Hand/Eye) dan ook niet uit de lucht gevallen: hij biedt zowel van Fit & Limo als van Stone Breath telkens twee tracks. Voor dit programma beperkten we ons uiteraard tot die van eerstgenoemden: "Lapis theme" hoorde u daarnet al, en nu volgt "Stein".

De laatste track, die u hoorde, haalden we van de LP "For The Dead In Space", opgedragen aan Pearls Before Swine, de New Yorkse sixties-formatie rond singer/songwriter Tom Rapp (die voor zover we weten tegenwoordig in Nederland verblijft). De titel van het nummer is uiteraard "Surrealist waltz" en hij staat oorspronkelijk op "One Nation Underground" uit 1967. Als "The Serpent Unrolled" een beetje lang op zich liet wachten na "Autre Monde", dan is dat hoofdzakelijk te wijten aan twee andere projecten, waarop Limo zich in tussentijd had gestort: Fim Froil en Discolor. Over Fim Froil (een samenwerking met Riff van The Cosmic Gardeners in het najaar van 1997) hebben we het vorige week al gehad. "De "Discolor"-CD verscheen in 1997 en was in principe een solo-project, maar Limo werkte er wel op samen met mensen als celliste Hanna Pietzcker, synthesizerman Harald Strecker en violist Robert Jandaschka. Het was de eerste release, die Limo verbond met het September Gurls-label, zowat het beste hedendaagse Duitse underground-label. Vorig jaar verscheen er een tweede CD onder de hoofding Discolor. De titel ervan was "Soundbath Installation" en hij werd opgenomen tussen maart en mei 1999.

Een vrij lange kennismaking met "Soundbath Installation" van Discolor, gevormd door de nummers "Blue passage" en de lange instrumental "Sea of tunes". Net als op de eerste Discolor-release werkten ook aan "Soundbath Installation" enkele gasten mee: Harald Strecker en Robert Jandaschka waren weer van de partij, net als violiste Julia Freitag, toetsenman Dr. Gasi, een zekere Zattl op pedal steel guitar en de ritmesectie van Shiny Gnomes (bassist Hanz en drummer UFO). Ook deze release verscheen op September Gurls. We gaan er ter afsluiting van deze summiere bespreking nog een redelijk lange brok uit laten horen, bestaande uit de nummers "Vista Unit III", "Vex" en "Sustaining halo".

Het korte stukje aan het einde van de reeks muziek, die we zonet achter de rug hebben, heet "Haga's painting" en komt uit "As Above, So Below", het meest recente album van Fit & Limo. Net als al hun andere releases werd deze CD (door September Gurls zoals het hoort ook op vinyl uitgebracht) bij het echtpaar thuis opgenomen, in het dorpje Altdorf, in de buurt van Nürnberg. Aangezien we het grootste deel van onze tekstuele pijlen al verschoten hebben in het eerste deel van deze uitzending, gaan we u eerst nader met het album in kwestie laten kennismaken, en dat doen we aan de hand van "Christian alchemy", "World in a grain" en "The highest mountain".

Fit & Limo, met drie tracks uit "As Above So Below". Zoals steeds namen Fit & Limo het leeuwendeel van de instrumenten voor hun rekening, die op het album aan bod kwamen. Onder hun beidjes speelden ze gitaar, autoharp, bas, banjo, drums, belletjes, bongos, bouzouki, orgels, hakkebord, cymbalen, harmonium, kazoo, mandoline, piano, sitar, blokfluit,xylofoon, tablas en viool (en dan heb ik er waarschijnlijk nog wel een paar over het hoofd gezien). In tegenstelling tot hun vorige album deden er ditmaal wel enkele gastmuzikanten mee: celliste Julia Freitag, die u zich ongetwijfeld nog herinnert van bij Discolor, trompettist Hermann Hösch en zangeres Theresa L. Beide laatstgenoemde hoort u nu aan het werk in "Owsley blues" (opgedragen aan de bekendste LSD-chemicus uit de jaren zestig). Daarna sluiten we deze show nog af met "Glockenspiel".

English speaking people mostly forget that there was a very small movement of individual groups in Germany who played psychedelic folk (Ougenweide & Emma Myldenberger as great acid folkrock bands, & Gürnemanz as a good folkrock band). These few releases are almost all must-haves (Carol Of Harvest, Langsyne, Witthüser & Westrupp, Emtidi, early Siloah, early Hölderlin, Bröselmachine, are those who have reissues). The only band that fits perfectly with these groups from today is Fit & Limo. With this release I think they remind us of this area even more than ever before. Of course also these German bands were influenced by Incredible String Band and COB but they still had their distinctive differences with the English movements, because they didn’t have any references to the folk traditions, but were even more liberated, still magical. It’s not strange to hear that for this release they asked Bernd Witthüser and Walter Westrupp to cooperate. Only Bernd could make it to deliver a home-recorded version of his classic “Lass uns auf die Reise gehen”. The singing is odd, hearing Bernds older voice, subtlety broken, with careful arrangements made just perfect for it.

-I asked Bernd what remained of his early period with Witthüser & Westrupp, and he told me the last 30 years he had been travelling as “Berrnelli”, a one man band playing all over Europe and Japan in several places and on the streets, ending in Italy. Since 2 years he started playing the old songs again.-

But there are even more cooperations. The exotic cooperation of Black Forest / Black Sea (who obviously understood and respected the essence of the group) made the song “Seraph” even more perfect. Jeffrey added electric guitar and drum and Miriam added cello, Indian banjo and tambura, while Fit played marimba and glockenspiel, and Limo mellotron, cymbal, gopichand and both added some vocals. "Mary of Malimbram” is another beauty with Jeffrey adding amplified guitar picking, and Miriam some cello). The last cooperative track is called "Cantiamo”, sung by Miriam in Italian, and it is also something special and unique. Used for this song were an old phonograph recording, 'granular synthesis' (info on this method is linked here), mellotron, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, and moog synthesizer.

Another favourite amongst the many, in the recognisable Fit & Limo style, is “Will you”, with sweet instrumentation and vocals, again unlike anything that is made and is popular in Germany or in most other countries nowadays.

On “Golden Floor” two more, (to me unknown) musicians cooperated, namely Steffi (tambura, vocals) & Peter Wolf (acoustic guitar), both singing. Here the semi-(middle) eastern singing definitely recalls clearly The Incredible Stringband. Another inspiration is the 'Song of Songs' by Solomon. (see translation in German / English here). This song, called “Wende dich her”, shows us also how beautiful and sweet German can sound. I noticed in Belgium that too many people still suffer from this "German language"-schock after once having heard Hitler and Goebels speeches, and having suffered from their influences, while the German language has enough soft sounds to sound poetic when used properly, like in this song. A second instrumental is called “In den Gärten Salomos” (= “In the Garden of Salomo”), a title which easily recalls another German master in music, Florian Fricke and his group Popol Vuh. (Florian Fricke made with his group a uniquely styled meditative music, with some Biblical inspiration, Indian and progressive elements. One of his so many highlights is an album called “Das Hohelied Salomos”). Stylistically their track starts as a longer instrumental acoustic improvisation, then goes into post-krautrock ethereal electronica & mellotron spheres, with additional Gothic Harp that works as the staircase connection from earth to these higher spheres or heavens.

A last cooperation is with Timothy Renner (Stone Breath, ..). He himself wrote two songs for Fit & Limo which fit perfectly on the album, like “The Weaving Song” with Fit & Limo’s nice arrangements (harmonium, sitar, vocals, etc.), with a very psychedelic instrumental part (with additional electric guitar, sitar, percussion), and the beautiful “Morning Wake”. Nice to see such fine cooperation. Used were vocal dialogues, glockenspiel, acoustic guitar, harmonium, and the predating mellotron-like 'chamberlin' tapeback playback recorder (-see links for more information on this instrument-). The last track, “Weisse Asche”, like before, uses the same kind of perfect combination of electronic sounds with acoustic instruments, a combination which makes this release even more beautiful, here as the accompaniment to another sweet song. A must for every psych-folk fan !

Fit & Limo : A Bunch of Herbs (D,2006)****

It’s been a while since we heard from Fit & Limo, so it is wonderful to hear of this double release, an LP with CD, mostly of now hard to find mostly previously released material with some exceptions.

Most songs on the LP were published before on their now sold out pre-September Gurls records releases, and were taken mostly from their wonderful Angel Gopher Lp, 1993. In that way I’m very happy to hear the great version of Incredible String Band’s “Three is a green crown” which includes fuzz, acoustic guitar, sitar, tabla, organ, or “Come with me”, and many other fantastic tracks from Fit & Limo’s early period. The album starts with “September 13th” which is a very nice 12 string instrumental which I forgot about. Most of the time this period will recall Incredible String Band at their best, but with a unique flavour which is typical for Fit & Limo. Their sound on these songs is absolutely gorgeous, charming, beautiful and unique, even when they stay often close in inspiration to The Incredible String Band. Besides ISB, “The Life and Times of Pan”, just like “Nutshell” for me also recall the ‘Parsival’ period of Elly & Rikkert. And let’s not forget a middle eastern/eastern hypnotic feel too to some of the tracks, like in “The Carpet”. “Goddess” is a more free ride on exotic sounds, followed by a sitar improvisation in a song, “Gopher Hat” next to the more hypnotic exotic (middle eastern/eastern) feeling in the next song, “Mystery”. This mix of exotic instruments, the attractive voice of Limo or Fit, all contribute beautifully to make a perfect psychedelic folk mix. Definitely a classic, which is not to miss if you missed the ISB tribute single, Angel Gopher or the double CD “Folly Is An Endless Maze” which contained most of these songs.

To make the purchase even more attractive, an extra CD of archived material comes with it, including many of the tracks which were published on various, now mostly sold out, compilations. From the 11 tracks on the CD, 5 were previously unreleased, one is an alternate version, and another one is an extended version. One of the instrumentals had a simple cello improvisation of Myriam Goldberg (Black Forest/Black Sea) over it. There has been caretaken that the tracks sound a bit different in the compilation. The new track, “The Lizard and the dragonfly” for instance, has acoustic strings as fundament, then some mellotron. The instrumentation in general always adds some dreamy happiness to the music, a flavour which I still find very unique for Germany of today ; but perhaps I must say it is possible that this flavour, sadly enough, even might be rare for this world, and in this way the music I think can work as cure for all the conspiracies and other focuses on selfishness. Most of the tracks on the CD are instrumentally just a bit simpler, with a certain essence of effective slightly dreamy beauty. Included is also a very fine Syd Barrett cover, “She took a long cold look” with some sitar (previously released in 1995), a version which gives an idea of how Syd Barrett could have been truly accompanied, I can imagine. Also their charming Pearls Before Swine cover from the Tom Rapp/PBS tribute album is included. A bit different and interesting is the one before last track of over 15 minutes, “Humpty Dumpty”, starting with some mellotron-like sounds recalling for me a bit the Steve Hillage-like echoing guitar (?). It is a track in several different sections of arrangements, building up, from an almost medieval flavour to pure improvisation, with, in fact, many different kind of instrumental inspirations of accompaniment, a track which is alone worth the purchase to find out about it. A nice closer is the German lullaby, “Wer hat die schönsten Schäfchen?”.
