folk-rock reviews presents
Galley Beggar

demo cdr EP (2010), CDR (2010)
demoGalley Beggar (UK,2010)****

These three tracks sound absolutely promising, now when during the last 20 years most folk/folkrock groups sound much further away from what the core of true English folk-rock makes such English folk sound original and traditional and very English, a bit court-like at the same time, but this band succeeds in this expression very well. “The Only Outlandish knight” sounds a bit like Sprigus Of Tolgus, with a core of English folk, led by female vocals, with a light sophistication, and a folk-rock sound where the subtle flavours of the acoustic part dominates (with use of mandolin, a violin arrangement on top, light electric bass and drums). It has a few interesting rhythm/theme changes. “Sun God” is folkier with arrangements of three voices, and a combination of mandolin with guitar. “Rowan” again has this old music flavour in a more folk-rock setting with beautifully performed vocal harmonies, recalling groups like Fotheringay perhaps. A successful sound and approach. Keep an eye on them ! Hopefully they will release a true album soon.

Members are Paul Dadswell, David Ellis, Mat Fowler, Mark Hammersley, Prasanthi Matharu and Frances Tye.
