the psych-folk of

pre-view copy     The Story / : The Dawn is crowned (side A) (US/UK,2005)***°

Forest were an important psychfolk band who released two, fine albums. Especially the second one has more worked out, longer tracks which makes this album at least a classic in the genre. The style holds a bit the middle between a calm Comus and perhaps Incredible String Band.
Now thirty years later, Martin Welham and son Tom Welham are about to release a split 12" mini vinyl album, shared with a group called Whysp (see below).

Harmony vocals still reminding of Forest, especially on the first track. Elsewhere the music has beautiful 60’s harmony and dual vocals and acoustic guitars. All tracks have a definite and true and honest end 60’s feel, without any “neo”-expression. On “Emergency” (a track with with some keyboard) where Tom sings solo his guitar style and solo vocals remind me a bit at Syd Barrett from his most sober/normal period. A recommended contribution to all 60’s music fans.

/ Whysp : The Dawn is crowned (side B) (US,2005)****

The Whysp has its own sincere large portion of Incredible Stringband/Forest influence, with varied instruments and vocals. Also included is a very fine psychfolk/Wicker Man-like version of early Pink Floyd -with-Barrett’s “Julia’s Dream”. “Clouds of Eider Down” which is a bit like a singing-along-in-group “alltogether-now” song, has an ISB-during-Changing-Horses style. “Being to being” with some sitar is equally very psych-trippy. If this is side B the release surely is a must for psych-folk collectors.

The Great Pop Supplement      Whysp : Sun Without End / Idyll (US,rec.2006/2007)***°

This is a, -now sold out-, two times 6 minutes single of Whysp, of communal post-I.S.B. typed hippie-pro celebrative song music. The first and most successful track features sitar by Glenn Donaldson (Skygrean Leopards), song driven lead vocals, hippie-strummed acoustic guitars, with small touches of remember-Pink Floyd in the organ elements, has striving towards a remember-the Wickerman kind of magic flute playing, and is like based upon a we-are-all-a-family hypnotic celebrate-the-grass in the garden gathering, celebrative music while being aware that “other people are working” somewhere else, and that this is a haven, shared in a groups’ musical feast. As a chorus they participate singing along as if this is a religion with all their enthusiasm, a pleasant song really, which is in fact completely provoking (with harmonica, singing and style) the area of Dr.Strangely Strange. The second side, although not too different with its elements, sounds however a bit more stoned and droning in nature of arrangements, or better : more like closed eyes sit down celebrative, (reminiscent more of a group like Feathers), featuring some really nice harmony female backing vocalists.

Hand numbered edition of 300 copies.

Yik Yak/Love Tape Love  Whysp -LP- (US,2004)**°°

Only just now I tried a summer sell-out copy of Santa Cruz based band Whysp's first LP. It was recorded in Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie)'s Nowhere studios in 2004. The band was formed by a trio (Josh Alper, Hugh Holden and Jeffrey Manson), but quickly became a loose musical communal foundation featuring members like Glenn Donaldson (Skygreen Leopards, Thuja and The Blithe Sons), Christine Boepple, Hugh Guthrie Holden, Jr., Ia Hernandez, Jeffrey Manson, Michele Hannigan, Caroyln Pennypacker-Riggs, Margaretha Haughwout, Karl Blau, Tom Child, Phil Elverum, Aaron "A-Ron" Emmert, Nicky "Dinosaur" Emmert, Kyle Field, John Garmon, Mike May, Adam "Handel" Payne, Niki Selken, Emily White. During this LP they were a sextet, which is is the founding trio with the already mentioned Tom Child, Emily White and John Garman. The band very much was inspired by Forest, an Incredible String Band alike UK folk band, with the new version of that band they were going to do some new recordings.

The first side showed an attractive mixture of the forest people meet 60s sounds with an Incredible String Band alike touch and a few more strummed Syd Barrett directions. The vocal harmonies of the full band are one of the strongest parts throughout the album. There are some weird flute harmonies, some mouth harmonica, 60s psych organ. There's an overall acoustic feeling, a playing with some loose ends, nearly amateurish. And somewhat primitively recorded and played with band's enjoyment, with a  context like being involved with nursery rhymes, lullabies and ballads. On the second side some less convincing, with somewhat lazily sung male vocal songs with simple strums dominate more, which takes away some of the enjoyment elsewhere, the primitivisms, despite its charm, could have been recorded better.

Currently the group is Josh Alper with Zachary Watkins, Annette Marines, and Cole Willsea.
